5 More Terrorists Killed in J&K’s Shopian; 3rd Operation in 4 Days

The police said they belonged to the Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba.

At least five more terrorists, affiliated to the Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba, were killed in a gun battle with the security forces in South Kashmir's Shopian district on Wednesday, 10 June.

"Five terrorists killed in an encounter in the Sugoo area of Shopian district, no collateral damage. Identification and affiliation of the killed terrorists is being ascertained," ANI quoted Jammu & Kashmir Police as saying.

This is the third major encounter in Shopian in less than a week, killing 14 militants in the Valley.

According to the details provided by the officials to IANS, the security forces had a specific input about the presence of terrorists in the Sugoo village. A cordon and search operation was launched by a joint team of the army and the police in the morning.

"They were involved in numerous acts, including killing of apple traders last year, threatening innocent civilians, businessmen and shopkeepers. They were also involved in brainwashing and coercing local youth in joining terrorist ranks," ANI quoted Brigadier Ajay Katoch as saying.

According to him, there were also reports of terrorists being involved in the abduction of Police personnel and, carrying out standoff attacks and grenade attacks on security forces.

On Sunday five terrorists were killed in an encounter in the Reban village also in Shopian district. On Monday in the same district, four terrorists were killed in the Pinjura village.
