Panjab University Agrees to Open Girls Hostel for 24 Hours

This comes after 48 days of protests. A committee to figure out the implementation of the 24x7 ruling is formed.

The students had been protesting since 29 October.  The university Senate agreed to their demands. A committee has been formed in order to chalk out how to implement the new policy.

The Panjab University, on Sunday, put an end to 48 days of protest by the students, by allowing to open the girls’ hostel for 24 hours, The Tribune reported.

The protests were led by Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) president Kanupriya. The protests demanded the lifting of timing restrictions on the entry of girls living in the hostel.

During the protests, the girls camped outside three girls’ hostel gates for 47 nights.

“It was my dream,” Kanupriya was quoted by The Tribune as saying.

The newspaper reported that all the fines on late entry of women have also been lifted. As per the earlier rules, girls were allowed a maximum of 10 late entries, the late coming time being 11pm. If someone entered after 11 pm for the eleventh time, they had to pay a Rs 100 fine. Rs 50 used to be charged in case a woman student failed to mark her attendance at 9 pm, The Tribune further reported.

Kanupriya had also demanded keeping only one register, instead of the multiple registers for separate kinds of outings. The ruling, however said that the girls will have to make an entry in a register.

A committee has been formed to figure out how it will implement the 24x7 ruling.
