A 34-year-old man from Delhi with no history of foreign travel has tested positive for monkeypox, the first case of the virus in the national capital.

As per a report by news agency IANS, the patient was admitted to the Maulana Azad Medical College Hospital around three days ago after he showed symptoms of the monkeypox virus.

His samples were then sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune on Saturday which came out positive.

With this, India's overall monkeypox tally has increased to four.

Asking citizens to avoid panic, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter and said that the "patient is stable and recovering".

"The first case of Monkeypox was detected in Delhi. The patient is stable and recovering. There's no need to panic. The situation is under control. We have made a separate isolation ward at LNJP. Our best team is on the case to prevent the spread and protect Delhiites," he tweeted.

On Saturday, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the global monkeypox outbreak as a public health emergency of "international concern".

The global health body said the expanding monkeypox outbreak in more than 70 countries is an "extraordinary" situation that now qualifies as a global emergency.
