As an investigation to uncover former Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative Bank MD Joy Thomas’s assets continues, sources told The Quint that Thomas had allegedly purchased multiple properties under the names of two individuals – Junaid and Junaid’s wife (her name is being withheld to protect her identity).

Wondering who Junaid is? Sources say that in 2012, Thomas, who was already married at that point, tied the knot a second time with his secretary. Thomas is said to have registered himself as Junaid and gotten married in Pune as per Islamic marriage rituals.

Sources say that documents have revealed that Thomas, aka Junaid, bought nine flats and one boutique in Pune jointly with his second wife.

These investments, sources told The Quint, amount to approximately Rs 4-5 crore. While his second wife resides in one of these flats, the eight other apartments have been rented out.

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police had already frozen the accounts of Joy Thomas in the first week of October.

Thomas had allegedly created 21,049 fake accounts on excel sheets to cover up the fact that HDIL had been defaulting on loan payments for years.

The properties attached include over 2,000 acres of land parcels, bungalows, private jets and luxury cars.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police have also frozen a Rs 100 crore worth Demat accounts owned by former PMC Bank chairperson Waryam Singh.
