Fire Breaks Out in Delhi’s Paschim Puri, Over 200 Shanties Gutted

A fire that broke out at a slum in Delhi’s Paschim Puri area early on Wednesday morning, 13 February, gutted at least 200 shanties.

A woman was injured and more than 200 shanties were caught in the fire that is now under control, Fire Officer AK Jaiswal told ANI.

“We got a call around 1 am that a fire had broken out in slums. We immediately sent 20-25 fire tenders to the spot. It took us two hours to control the fire, a woman was injured and has been shifted to a hospital. More than 200 huts were caught in the fire.”

A day before, another fire had swept through a five-storey hotel in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh, killing at least 17 people, including a child and two who had jumped off the building in a desperate bid to save themselves, officials said.

The blaze, in which 35 people were injured, started on the second floor of the Arpit Palace Hotel in the heart of the national capital around 4:35 am on Tuesday, 12 February, trapping many guests who sleeping.
