Tension prevailed in parts of Jaipur after a seven-year-old girl was abducted and raped by an unidentified person in the city’s Shastri Nagar, triggering protests by locals, according to PTI.

What Happened?

“The girl was abducted by a motorcycle-borne man and taken to a nearby place where she was raped,” a police official said.

The girl was found near her house on Monday night and was taken to a local hospital where the doctors referred her to JK Lone hospital. Her condition is stated to be stable.

The incident soon took a communal turn after the news spread on social media, and local residents protested outside the hospital where the child was being treated, following which additional policemen were deployed in the area, according to PTI.

A mob also damaged windowpanes of some cars parked in the streets.

What Action Was Taken?

The district administration has extended till Friday the suspension of mobile internet to quell rumour mongering on social networking sites following the rape incident, reported PTI.

Mobile internet services will remain suspended till 10 am on Friday considering the law and order situation in 13 police station areas of the city, divisional commissioner KC Verma said in an order.

“We have deployed additional policemen in the area to maintain law and order. The situation is under control and efforts are being made to arrest the accused,” DCP North Manoj Kumar said.

State Transport Minister Pratap Singh Khachariawas visited the hospital on Tuesday and enquired about the girl's health.  “This is a heinous crime. The culprit should be hanged. Police are making all efforts to nab the accused,” he said.

Additional Director General of Police (civil rights) Janga Srinivas Rao also visited the victim at the hospital.
