The Union Human Resource Development Ministry on Thursday, 25 June, told the Supreme Court that Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 10 and 12 board examinations, to be held from 1 to 15 July, stand cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The apex court will pass an order on Friday, 26 June, at 10.30 am after the government filed a detailed affidavit on the assessment scheme for the exams.

Class 12 Exams Optional

The Board has decided to make the examinations for Class 12 optional, the government submitted before the court.

The Centre told the SC that while exams for Class 12 students will be conducted “as soon as situation is conducive," students who opt for the exams will have the said marks as final. For others, the CBSE will take marks scored in the past three exams in account, the Centre told apex court.

Centre is also required to clarify, by 26 June, the issue of option between internal assessment and exam.

Class 10 Exams Cancelled

For Class 10, the students will not get the same option, and the exams stand cancelled for all.

The hearings at the apex court are based on a petition filed by the parents of CBSE students, who had said conducting board exams in this pandemic situation would only expose students to the threat of coronavirus.

In order to ensure the safety and security of students and their families, the petitioners had asked the Supreme Court to scrap the pending CBSE papers and allow students to be graded on the basis of internal assessment in combination with marks of papers that have already been conducted.

Results in Mid-August?

The results for the already held exams will be declared in mid-August and the academic year is expected to start in September 2020, the Centre has said. However, the apex court has sought clarification over this.
