Actor Sunny Deol (Ajay Singh Deol) joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, 23 April. The actor, who is known for his movies like Border and The Hero: Love Story of a Spy will be contesting from Gurdaspur in Punjab against Indian National Congress’ Sunil Jakhar and Aam Aadmi Party's Peter Masih.
Soon after his entry into politics, the Twitterati caught on and responded with memes and jokes regarding Deol's entry into politics.
Of course, there were a lot of memes based on scenes from his movie Gadar: Ek Prem Katha that went viral on social media.
Stand-up comedian Atul Khatri, along with ad filmmaker Ram Subramanian, also reacted to Deol joining BJP.
The 62-year-old actor was welcomed into BJP by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday.
Deol said, "The way my papa worked with and supported Atal ji, I am here today to work with and support Modi ji. My work will do the talking."
He is not the first one to contest from his family of veteran actors. His father, Dharmendra, had fought on a BJP ticket from Bikaner in Rajasthan in 2004, and his stepmother Hema Malini is the sitting BJP MP from Mathura and is re-contesting from the same constituency in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
