“During elections, netas come and say ‘vote, and we will complete the construction for the bridge.’ The people vote, but still there is no completion.”
Abdul Dar, Resident, Dogripora

With the 2019 general elections just weeks away, The Quint travelled to Dogripora, a village in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir to ask the citizens about their problems and what the status of neta’s promises were. The residents of the village told Neeraj Gupta that the bridge over river Jhelum that could connect their village to the highway has been under construction since 18 years.

Without a bridge, the residents are disconnected from the highway and the railway.

“The bridge connects to the railways on one side and the highway on the other. But, it is under construction since 18 years. The construction started in 2001.”
Abdul Dar

The residents of Dogripora have had a lot of back and forth with the government over the last 18 years but they say any promise to complete the construction of the bridge is limited to before the elections.

“When the election is approaching, they come to start the construction work. After the election is over, there is no work.”
Ghulam Mohammed Lone

Successive governments over the years have promised that the bridge would one day be complete, but the promises have remained unfulfilled.
