A college student was allegedly gang-raped and a friend of hers beaten at Lalithadripura Layout in Mysuru on Tuesday, 24 August. Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra told The News Minute that four men allegedly committed the crime.
The girl is presently admitted in a hospital and a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged in the case at Alanahally police station.
Dr Chandragupta, Commissioner of Police, Mysuru City, as per ANI, said:
The assault reportedly began after the girl and her friend refused to give money to a group of men who had been following them and had surrounded them. The News Minute reported that the men were in an inebriated state when the incident took place.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai informed ANI that a case has been registered based on a statement of the girl.
Meanwhile, as per NDTV, Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra has said that he had instructed his subordinates to take the case very seriously.
Dubbing the incident “very unfortunate,” he further said:
"An FIR has been registered. Our officials have been sent to Mysuru from Bengaluru.”
The home minister has also told ANI that the police are trying to trace the accused. However, no arrests have been made yet.
"The girl is admitted to a hospital and her statement is yet to be recorded. I will be going to Mysuru today (Thursday) evening," he added.
The National Commission for Women has also taken cognisance of the case and initiated the process to provide necessary compensation to the survivor as per the rules of the Victim Compensation Scheme under Section 357A of the Criminal Procedure Code.
It has directed the state government officials to provide the survivor with medical and counselling support.
According to news agency ANI, the Commission has also written to Director General of Police (DGP) of Karnataka to make sure that all accused are identified and immediately arrested and charged under relevant sections of the law.
