With 45 names still to go, the BJP has dropped half of its winning SC/ST MPs from last time.
Of the 49 SC/ST seats from which BJP candidates had won in 2014 and for which names been announced, in almost half (24), sitting MPs have been dropped, Indian Express said in a report.

In a blow to the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in Kerala, a party candidate was sent to jail by a court Thursday in a case related to the alleged attack on a woman devotee in Sabarimala temple last November.
Prakash Babu, the party’s candidate in Kozhikode constituency, was remanded to 14-day judicial custody by a court in Kerala’s Ranni.

22 people were injured during Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu's Wednesday, 27 March roadshow in Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur, the police confirmed on Thursday, 28 March.
Meanwhile, a mishap on Wednesday occurred at YSRCP president Jaganmohan Reddy's public meeting which caused the death of a person.
At Naidu's rally, according to police, locals were trying to climb a building for a better view when a wall collapsed and the debris fell on the those who were standing below the building.
In Jaganmohan's public meeting as part of election campaign at Mandapeta town in East Godavari district. A slab collapsed near the meeting dais.
In that incident, one person died and almost 50 people were injured. The victims were shifted to Mandapeta and Kakinada govt hospitals. Reportedly it was an old building and could not bear the force of the crowd.

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Election Commission (EC) on hearing a contempt petition for not enforcing the court's order which stated that it is mandatory for candidates to publish in newspapers, the number of pending criminal cases against them, in their filing of nomination papers during elections.
The Supreme Court bench, headed by Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, and comprising Justice Vineet Saran, has sought the EC’s response within a week.

About 25 per cent of young Indian voters are doubtful of the authenticity of the electronic voting machine (EVM), according to a new survey by news app Inshorts.
An overwhelming 85 of the participants in the survey said voting should be made compulsory.
"Nowadays, people are aware about their rights and consider voting a responsibility as citizens," Inshorts CEO Azhar Iqbal said in a statement.
The survey is based on responses from two lakh Inshorts subscribers across the country in March.

The Election Commission today said the BJP has sought 10 more days to respond to a show cause notice issued to a member of its national election committee for sharing an "audio-visual advertisement" titled "main bhi chowkidar hun" on social media without complying with the directions of the poll body.
Delhi's chief electoral officer, in a statement, said, "As regards the show cause notice dated March 26, issued for sharing the audio-visual ad titled 'main bhi chowkidar hun' on social media, the BJP has sought 10 days to file a reply." The poll body had earlier asked the BJP election committee member to submit a reply within three days.
BJP has fielded candidates in 27 out of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka, with the party today finally announcing the nominees for the remaining three parliamentary constituencies.
The party has supported independent candidate and multi lingual actress Sumalatha Ambareesh in the Mandya Lok Sabha seat and has not fielded anyone there.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he protects the rich while his own party bats for the poor, the weaker sections and the farmers.

After a prolonged tug-of-war among its partners, the 'mahagathbandhan' (Grand Alliance) in Bihar finally allocated all of the 40 Lok Sabha seats today, announcing candidature of Misa Bharti from Pataliputra, Congress' Meira Kumar from Sasaram and RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui's from Darbhanga.
As per the seat-sharing formula, the RJD has got 20 seats, out of which it is giving up one for the ultra-Left party, the Congress has nine, followed by five for Upendra Kushwaha's RLSP and three each for Jitan Ram Manjhi's HAM and Mukesh Sahni's VIP.

The CPI today announced that it would give a minimum pension of Rs 9,000 per month, grant full statehood to Delhi and Puducherry and a one-time comprehensive loan waiver for farmers as part of its manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls.

The Trinamool Congress today rebuffed BJP president Amit Shah's claim to replicate the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise in West Bengal if the saffron party returns to power at the Centre.

Taking a swipe at the grand alliance of opposition parties, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said the 'mahagathbandhan' is a 'non-bandhan', political circus and a recipe for chaos.
Several political parties, mostly traditional BJP opponents, have come together to take on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the ensuing general elections beginning 11 April.
In a blog post, Jaitley said that over the last several months, India was "exhausted" with the talk of a 'Mahagathbandhan'.
The rationale, he said, was that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP were very strong and could not be challenged by individual party.

The Election Commission today asserted in the Supreme Court that 21 opposition leaders have been unable to raise any ground for altering the existing system of random counting of the VVPAT slips from one polling booth per assembly segment which was "found to be most suitable" after due studies and tests.
EC sought dismissal of their petition seeking that VVPAT slips of at least 50 per cent of voting machines in each assembly constituency be checked randomly in the Lok Sabha elections next month.

An FIR was registered against two persons today for not depositing their licensed weapons ahead of the general elections, officials said.
The case was registered against Ashok Kumar and Mahinder Singh, residents of Badyal Brahamana area under the Arms Act, they said.
The two violated an order of the Jammu district magistrate regarding deposition of all licensed weapons in the nearest police station, the officials said.

The Congress today announced two candidates for the assembly bypolls in Goa next month, naming former minister Mahadev Naik from Shiroda and fielding Sudhir Kandolkar from Mapusa.
By-elections are scheduled in Shiroda, Mapusa and another assembly constituency Mandrem on 23 April. The same day voting will take place for the two Lok Sabha seats in the coastal state.
Naik, a former minister who had quit the BJP last month, will contest from his traditional Shiroda assembly segment in North Goa.

In a big relief to JDS patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, Congress sitting MP from Tumkur S P Muddahanumegowda today pulled out of the contest as the rebel candidate against him.
Gowda is the joint nominee of Karnataka's Congress-JDS ruling alliance, which was worried over his electoral prospects after Muddahanumegowda jumped into the fray defying the understanding under which the seat was allotted to the JDS.

The Delhi BJP today alleged that the "Chinese social media applications on Facebook" are spreading misinformation about the party and asked the Election Commission to take action against their interference in the poll process.
In a letter to the Election Commission, the party said advertisements on the apps are being created and shared "with an intention to create a disinformation campaign against our party".
The party also demanded legal action against the apps.

BJP's Etawah MP Ashok Kumar Dohrey joined the Congress today after meeting party president Rahul Gandhi here, and within hours he was fielded by the opposition party from the constituency.
Dohrey joined the Congress fold days after he was denied a BJP ticket from the Etawah Lok Sabha constituency, from where the ruling party has declared former Union minister Ram Shankar Katheria.

A team from the Delhi poll body seized Rs 25 lakh in cash in southwest Delhi Friday, a statement from the Chief Electoral officer said.
The Static Surveillance Team of Matiala assembly constituency, SDM office, Kapashera, seized the cash at Jhatikara border, it said.
The team was doing its surveillance duty to monitor model code of conduct violations at the site, and during a routine check up the cash was found in a Ford Endeavour SUV bearing a Haryana registration number, the statement said.

Taking on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue of surgical strikes, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao Friday said such "strategic attacks" are never disclosed and claimed 11 similar strikes were made during the UPA I regime when he was a Union Minister.
Addressing an election rally in Nalgonda district hours after the Prime Minister launched BJP's campaign in the state, he alleged Modi was spreading 'lies' against the TRS government for the sake of votes and political gains.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi today said his party, if voted to power, will scrap the Niti Aayog and replace it with a "lean" Planning Commission.
Gandhi said the Niti Aayog, set up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after he assumed power in 2014, served no purpose other than making marketing presentations for the PM and "fudging data".
"If voted to power, we will scrap the NITI Aayog," he said in a tweet.
